Defines and publishes general education requirements

A&M-Texarkana defines general education requirements for its undergraduate programs and publishes them in the catalog.1 The general educational requirements, identified and required by state law, are comprised of 42 semester credit hours, and are discussed in more detail in Core Requirement 2.7.3.2a Competencies related to the general education requirements are identified and discussed at length in Comprehensive Standard 3.5.1.2b Although the university is an upper level institution, and all core curriculum courses are transferred to A&M-Texarkana from elsewhere, the Office of Degree Planning makes certain that all students have completed the core curriculum of 42 semester credit hours, as identified.

Defines and publishes major program requirements

A&M-Texarkana defines major program requirements and publishes them in the catalog as well, both for undergraduate 3 and for graduate programs.4 Program requirements are discussed in detail in the catalog, and are comprised of 123-137 semester credit hours at the undergraduate level, and 36-54 semester credit hours at the graduate level.5 Although the university is an upper level institution, and all lower-level program requirements are transferred to A&M-Texarkana from elsewhere, the Offices of the Registrar and of Degree Planning makes certain that all students have completed the program requirements as identified. As a general rule, at least 50% – 60% of the required courses in any degree program are junior/senior level courses, and, of course, offered at A&M-Texarkana.

Conform to commonly accepted standards

Both the general education and major program requirements conform to commonly accepted standards and practices for degree programs. The general education requirements are identified and required by state law to provide conformity and uniform standards across the state of Texas. Individual program requirements are initially determined by the faculty in the discipline. Program proposals are reviewed and approved by colleagues in the College, who forward the proposal with the dean’s signature to the University Curriculum Committee and then to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The state of Texas further assures conformity to commonly accepted standards by requiring that all new publicly-funded degree program proposals be approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB). Before a program proposal from A&M-Texarkana goes to the Coordinating Board, it must also be reviewed and approved by the A&M University System Board of Regents.

After a program is approved by the THECB, the agency requires that any significant changes be approved though them as well. Any changes to program requirements at a local level, therefore, must essentially follow the same processes as a new program proposal. The administration determines if the change is significant enough to be sent to the THECB for approval.

And A&M-Texarkana makes further certain that its major programs are continually adhering to accepted standards and practices by requiring all degree programs and areas of emphasis to be reviewed on a five-year rotation plan.6

The following list identifies the location in the General Catalog of the requirements for each specific degree program in the university.
