Statement of Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

 

Outreach through distance learning increases student access to TAMUT academics and services, providing “residents of Northwest Texas with the broadest possible access to quality educational opportunities, and services.” 1     Such outreach provides students an opportunity to improve intellectually that they might not have otherwise due to geographical constraints. Texas A&M University-Texarkana offers two main types of off-campus and distance education programs. The first consists of traditional off-site classroom instruction.  Courses of this type are offered at Mt. Pleasant and Garland. The second type, electronic instruction, consists of all other distance education electronic courses, interactive video and web courses, offered through each college. 2  The university aims to provide the “broadest possible access” to education.  TAMUT fulfills this ideal by reaching out to students across the region through outreach programs.

 

While the level of outreach is important, to fulfill the mission, the university must ensure that these distance courses are also quality courses.  Each distance course offered must follow the principles of good practice that have been developed by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.  One of the requirements set by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board states that each distance course offered must fulfill the same comprehensive standards applied to on-campus courses. 3
