Purpose

The Master of Arts in English at Texas A&M University-Texarkana emphasizes English composition and English as a Second Language, with a secondary focus on literature. The degree is intended primarily for students who are currently working or who are planning a career at any level in the field of English language arts instruction, from elementary through community college. Options within the program allow students to focus on a particular area of interest. The degree is not primarily intended to give students the broad background in literature normally expected of those who enter a Ph.D. program in English. Students will consult with an advisor to choose a minor in a complementary field.

Objectives

The Master of Arts in English will

  • offer elementary language arts teachers the opportunity to obtain advanced literary training, including course work in children’s literature and composition instruction, along with an optional minor in a related area of education;
  • offer secondary teachers an advanced English degree with an emphasis in literature or composition;
  • offer students who want to teach at the college level a sound academic background in composition and appropriate training in research;
  • offer teachers seeking ESL endorsement the opportunity to pursue a Master’s degree which strengthens their overall knowledge of English language and literature.
