| 1.0 | GENERAL |
| Texas A&M University-Texarkana is supportive of student participation in academic, co-curricular or extra-curricular activities both on and off campus, but also recognizes that the safety of its students is of utmost importance. The requirements outlined in this rule apply to student travel that is more than 25 miles from campus to an activity or event that is organized, sponsored, or funded by a TAMU-T or officially recognized TAMU-T student organization, using a vehicle owned or operated by TAMU-T. (Examples of vehicles include cars, vans or buses that are either owned or operated by TAMU-T or are rented through commercial agencies.) |
| 2.0 | TRAVEL SAFETY GUIDELINES

| During travel situations specified above, students must abide by the following safety guidelines. |
| 2.1 | In accordance with State law, drivers must use seat belts or other available safety restraints and require all passengers to do likewise.

| 2.2 | Drivers, occupants and their luggage should not exceed the official maximum capacity of the vehicle used.
|
| 2.3 | Drivers must be at least 21 years old and possess a valid driver's license that is appropriate for the classification of vehicle being driven.

| 2.4 | Operator fatigue should be considered when selecting drivers. On lengthy trips, alternate drivers should be used to avoid fatigue.

| 2.5 | Only TAMU-T employees (including student-employees) shall be authorized to drive a university-owned or leased vehicle, except in an emergency situation where the staff/faculty driver is incapacitated, due to injury or illness, preventing him/her from safely continuing to operate the vehicle. In the event a student operates a TAMU-T vehicle in such emergency, the student must possess a valid driver's license. |
| 3.0 | PROCEDURES |
| Academic and administrative units of TAMU-T may have their own specific procedures for student travel in order to provide additional details to the above requirements. These procedures should be provided to all students requesting Authorization for Student Travel and should be coordinated through the Office of Risk Management & Security and/or the Office of Student & Academic Support Services. |
