Undergraduate Curriculum Committee Meeting

1.            Agenda
2.            Meeting called to order at 2:34pm by Dr. Racheotes.

3.            Dr. Hughes moved, seconded by Dr. Brumm to approve the minutes from face-to-face previous meeting November 10, 2009.  Motion to approve the minutes,  
             carried. 
(Note: the December 10, 2009 meeting was held via e-mail due to only one agenda item, it was approved by unanimous vote.

4.            Dr. Wagy moved, seconded by Dr. Govindaswamy to approve Course Inventory Add/Reinstate CJ 421 American Law (Jordan).  Dr. Stripling inquired as to who can take the course, Dr. Jordan replied that it was open to anyone.  Dr. Stripling reminded him to consider how often it is offered and consider how it will affect the 2 year schedule.  Motion to approve item 4 as presented, carried.

               

Point of Interjection:  Dr. Stripling also gave a general caution to all to consider that the more           sections offered of a course, the fewer students in each and the greater risk of classes not                making.  She offered the information to the faculty that class minimums are going up           beginning this   summer.  New minimums will be 8 for graduate and 15 for undergraduate.   

 

5.            Dr. Hughes moved, seconded by Dr. Allard to approve Changes to Existing Undergraduate Program: Criminal Justice (Jordan).
             Motion to approve item 5 as presented, carried.

6.            Dr. Hughes moved, seconded by Dr. Allard to approve Changes to Existing Undergraduate Program:  Political Science (Bugh).
             Motion to approve item as presented 6, carried.

Point of Interjection:  Dr. Brumm voiced concern for the amount of paperwork printed for consideration of each item.  General discontent and agreement was voiced by the others.

7.            Changes to Existing Undergraduate Program:  Political Science (BA degree) (Bugh).

                Withdrawn by Dr. Bugh on February 10, 2010 prior to the meeting.  No vote necessary.

8.            Dr. Beason moved, seconded by Dr. Govindaswamy to approve Course Changes:  ENGL 200 Introduction to Literature (Davis).
             Dr. Racheotes inquired if this was a course number only or a new course.  Dr. Doris Davis was called to the meeting to answer questions and she

                confirmed it was a number change and was the same as Introduction to English.  Motion to approve item 8 as presented, carried. 

9.            Dr. Govindaswamy moved, seconded by Dr. Allard to approve Changes to Existing Undergraduate Program:  Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
             
(Lala).  It was      noted that the only change is to remove Mgt 446 and add CS 467. Motion to approve item 9 as presented, carried.

                After review of the minutes, Mrs. Johnson-Cobb offered the following regarding item 9:

                “They stated this but it is not the case.  There were several changes to the program in addition to the two mentioned.”

10-12    Dr. Govindaswamy moved, seconded by Dr. Hughes that  

                item 10, Changes to Existing Undergraduate Program:  Bachelor of Science in Math    (Allard),

                item 11, Changes to Existing Undergraduate Program:   Bachelor of Science in Math   Grades 4-8 (Allard) and

                item 12, Changes to Existing Undergraduate Program:   Bachelor of Science in Math   Grades 8-12(Allard)

                be considered as one and be approved in one vote.  Motion to approve items 10 – 12 as     presented, carried.

13.          Dr. Govindaswamy moved, seconded by Dr. Beason to approve Course Changes:  EE 332 C++ Programming (Lala).  Dr. Beason and Dr. Stripling voiced concerns that the outcomes must be measurable, i.e. select, explain, evaluate, to meet SAC requirements.  After discussion, it was determined it would be approved as it.  Motion to approve item 13 as presented, carried.

14-15    Dr. Brumm moved, seconded by Dr. Wagy that

                item 14, Course Changes:  BIOL 1306 Biology I (Allard)  

                item 15, Course Changes:  BIOL 1307 Biology II (Allard)

                item 18, Course Inventory Add/Reinstate: BIOL 1106 Biology I Lab (Allard)

                item 19, Course Inventory Add/Reinstate:  BIOL 1107 Biology II Lab (Allard)

                 be considered as one and be approved in one vote.  Motion to approve items 14 and 15 as presented, carried. 

16-17    Dr. Govindaswamy moved, seconded by Dr. Beason that

                item 16, Course Changes:  CHEM 1311 General Chemistry I (Alam)

                item 17, Course Changes:  CHEM 1312 General Chemistry II (Alam)

                be considered as one and be approved in one vote.  Motion to approve items 16 and 17 as presented, carried. 

18-19    Please see item 14-15 above.

20-30    Dr. Govindaswamy moved, seconded by Dr. Beason that

                item 20, Course Inventory Add/Reinstate:  CS 1315 Introduction to Computer Science (Aizenberg)

                item 21, Course Inventory Add/Reinstate:  CS 2305 Discrete Mathematics for   Engineers (Aizenberg)

                item 22, Course Inventory Add/Reinstate:  CS 2318 Engineering Mathematics (Aizenberg)

                item 23, Course Inventory Add/Reinstate:  CS 332 C+++ Programming (Aizenberg)

                item 24, Course Inventory Add/Reinstate: CS 352 Java Programming (Aizenberg)

                item 25, Course Inventory Add/Reinstate:  CS 353 Advanced Object-Oriented  Programming (Aizenberg)

                Dr. Brumm voiced concern that the computer website “Facebook”™ is included in the course requirements and since it is subject to the control of others could be removed from operation.  It was agreed that it the usage of the term “Facebook”™ was not meant to refer to the website but to a general on-line gathering place and could remain, but no link to the “Facebook”™ website would be included.    

                Review of items 21 and 22 led to a general discussion regarding the course prefix, COSC (lower division) vs. CS.  Mrs. Black will research and report but Dr. Stripling offered that the course prefixes can be modified later if necessary. 

                Motion to approve items 20– 30 as presented, carried.

31.          Old Business:    None

32.          New Business: 

                A)           Dr. Beason suggested syllabus requirements be as follows:

                                1)  New courses will use the template and be a maximum of six pages

                                2)  Old courses will not require a syllabus

                                3)  Number change only will not require a syllabus

                                4)  Delivery change needs a syllabus

33.          Meeting adjournment was moved by Dr. Govindaswamy and seconded by Dr. Beason.
