Young Writers Program

Every summer, English Professor Doris Davis, Director of the East Texas Writing Project, organizes the Texarkana Young Writers’ Program.  The program serves students from the four Texarkana Independent School Districts: Liberty-Eylau, Pleasant Grove, Texarkana (Arkansas), and Texarkana (Texas).

For two weeks in June, about 150 students, from second-graders to high-school juniors, spend their mornings writing with master teachers.  Along with daily activities that make writing fun and interesting, students enjoy visits from children’s authors such as Kathi Appelt of College Station, Texas, and Darcy Pattison of North Little Rock, Arkansas; and from storytellers such as Jerre Roberts of Arkansas and Michael Caduto of Vermont.

The program culminates with a public presentation when students read from their writing to an audience of their teachers and parents. And finally, each student submits a composition to be published in the Texarkana Young Writers’ Program Anthology.

A&M-Texarkana offers the Texarkana Young Writers’ Program through generous support from the following sponsors:

The International Paper Foundation

The Texarkana Community Foundation

The Texarkana Gazette
