Minutes of the meeting of May 2, 2003

Quorum call:  30 members present.

Minutes of Senate meetings of March 28 and April 9, 2003, approved.

Reports and recommendations of standing committees:

Academic Affairs Committee, Dr. Art Simonson, Chair

1. The Senate approved the committee’s recommendation to keep the option of assigning students a mark of  “no grade” (NG) for a course.  (Moved by Dr. Doris Davis, seconded by Dr. Shirley Garrick, approved by unanimous voice vote.)

2.  The Senate approved the committee’s recommendation of a standard process for using a mark of X “incomplete.” (Moved by Dr. Dennis Kern, seconded by Dr. Doris Davis, approved by unanimous voice vote.)

Faculty Welfare Committee, Dr. John Hamilton, Chair

1.  The committee’s recommendation on faculty evaluation by students was tabled.  (Moved by Dr. Charles McDonald, seconded by Dr. Shirley Garrick, approved by voice vote.)

2.      The committee’s recommendation on faculty workload was tabled.

(Moved by Dr. Charles McDonald, seconded by Dr. Patrick Ryan, approved unanimously by voice vote.)

3.       The Senate approved the committee’s recommendation to refine the

procedure for evaluating tenured faculty.  (Moved by Dr. seconded by Dr. Serajul Bhuiyan, seconded by Dr. Bosede Aworuwa, approved unanimously by voice vote.)

            University Welfare Committee, Dr. Shirley Garick, Chair

1.      The Senate approved the committee’s recommendation that faculty

participate in evaluating administrators.  (Moved by Dr. Tom Gandy, seconded by Dr. Barry Nutter, approved by voice vote.)

Factual data on the 2003 and 2004 budgets for TAMU-T

Dr. Joan Brumm explained the 2003 operating budget for TAMU-T.
