Graduate Programs in Special Education |
Graduate programs in
special education prepare individuals to work with students with exceptionalities.
University students may seek certification only and/or a masters
degree (completed simultaneously). For those seeking a masters degree (M.S. or
M.Ed.) the university requires a comprehensive examination at the completion of
all coursework.
There are four options available:
Masters
of Science (M.S.) in Special
Education

Special Educator (SPED Certification)
Masters
of Education (M.Ed.) in
Educational Diagnostician
2. Educational Diagnostician (Educational
Diagnostician Certification)
Program Descriptions:
1.
The Special Educator program is designed for individuals who wish
to teach in Special Education classrooms (Resource, Self-contained, &
inclusive settings) and complete a Masters of Science degree. Training prepares
teachers to meet the State Board of Educator Certification standards and
successfully complete the Special Education TExES.
2.
The Educational
Diagnostician certification program prepares teachers
to
work as
a public school educational diagnostician professional. Training prepares
teachers to meet the State Board of Educator Certification standards and
successfully complete the Educational Diagnostician TExES. The training program
includes major coursework emphasis in the following areas:

Public
school and special education law in relation to students with disabilities
·
Nondiscriminatory
evaluation and assessment of students referred for special education services
·
Case
management for eligible students with disabilities
·
Curriculum
and instructional planning for students with disabilities
·
Collaboration
with school personnel and parents of students with disabilities
Educational
Diagnostician Certification requirements include:
Two years of
teaching experience in the public school
Master degree
Successful
completion of coursework
Successful
completion of TExES
