An ellipsis ( . . . ) indicates the omission of information from a quotation
or generates a trailing effect within a sentence.

Using the Ellipsis Properly

1) Use an ellipsis to indicate that information has been omitted from a quotation.

The dean says, “There are many problems with the new campus . . . including parking and a lack of computers . . . .”

Note: Place a period after an ellipsis that closes a sentence.

2) Use an ellipsis to create a trailing effect.

No help is coming . . . .

3) Do not place a period after a closing ellipsis if the thought is incomplete.

I thought he meant . . .
