Parentheses { ( ) } enclose nonsessential information added to a
sentence; parentheses deemphasize the information they enclose.
Using Parentheses Properly
1) Use parentheses to mark information that is useful but nonessential.
The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) has
remained an active organization.
2) Use parentheses in whole or partial form around letters or numbers to
indicate items in a
series.
He believes he needs the following items to persuade his girlfriend to marry
him: 1) some original poetry, 2) a dozen roses, and 3) a romantic setting.
