A semicolon ( ; ) is used to connect two independent but related clauses
or to separate items in a list when using commas for separation would
generate confusion.

Using Semicolons Properly

1) Use a semicolon to join two related main clauses not joined by a
coordinating conjunction
.

Viola sat next to the bed; she sighed heavily.

2) Use a semicolon to join two related main clauses connected by a
conjunctive adverb
.

He wants a better job; however, he does not have time for retraining.

3) Use semicolons to separate items in a series that contain excessive
internal punctuation
or a high degree of complexity.

The little man opened the cabinet to reveal glass beads, goblets, and
marbles; gold bracelets and earrings; and several sets of jade cufflinks.
