Summer 2017 Workshops

We are thrilled to announce the dates for our summer 2017 Young Writers’ Workshop program!

The workshops will be held on the main campus of Texas A&M University-Texarkana on July 17 – 28 from 8:30am to 12pm each weekday.

This summer, we are regrouping our young writers in ways we think will help serve them better. Details on the theme for each workshop will be coming soon.

We Love Our Pets! (grades 2 & 3)

  • Dogs, cats, birds, guinea pigs, oh my! Our youngest group of writers will read, write, and share stories about pets they have or wish they could have! Participants will learn to write and illustrate funny short stories and photo essays.

Magnificent Mysteries and Whodunits (grades 4-6)

  • Our intermediate young writers will explore the nosy nature of mystery stories and detective fiction where they’ll learn how to use their own lives as inspiration. Participants will learn to write mystery short stories and newspaper articles about curious cases and suspicious characters.

Fantastic Fantasy (grades 7 & 8)

  • Our advancing writers will take inspiration from J.K. Rawlings’ newest tale, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and explore the world of fantasy fiction. These writers will create character profiles and write illustrated fantasy stories featuring beasts, witches, goblins, wizards, or whatever their minds can create!

Weird Science (grades 9-12)

  • Our not-so-young high school writers will dive into the weird world of science fiction, creating their own science fiction stories. Even our high schoolers get to have some hands-on fun by creating collages that allow them to pull multiple materials together that depict their sci-fi worlds.

All workshops are under the direction of current area English Language Arts teachers or current preservice teachers from the College of Education and Liberal Arts.

Registration is $40 and covers all writing supplies and books. Participants will also receive a free t-shirt, cool A&M-Texarkana gear, a Young Writers’ Workshop certificate, a program anthology, and commemorative DVD.

Snacks/refreshments are not provided, but participants will have the opportunity each day to visit the bookstore and purchase snacks. Students must arrange their own transportation.

This summer, thanks to the generous support of the Bobbie Arnold Atkinson Foundation, participants will get to meet and learn from a published children’s author during one day of the program!

Keep checking this page for more information about this summer’s themes, an announcement of this summer’s visiting author, and registration/application details.
