SOME IDEAS FOR TUNNELING CENSUS DATA TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD LEVEL:
The links below aren't pop-up windows, so print these instructions first or
open a duplicate browser window with these instructions.
- map location
Yahoo maps at http://maps.yahoo.com/
is good for locating a place on a map.
You can enter a street address or an intersection.
For example, the Texarkana, AR city website gives an address of "E. 14th
at Ash Street" for the Sandflat/Glendale Neighborhood Center.
Enter this for the address and enter Texarkana, AR for the city.
Yahoo will return a street map and the zip code.
- mapped census data
FairData at http://www.fairdata2000.com/
automatically plots useful maps of census data.
You can go to http://www.fairdata2000.com/VoterRegistration/index.html
for a list of states, but this won't get us to the useful stuff.
I can't figure out how their index gets us to the right place, but try going
HERE.
This will get you to the address Sandflat center above, and from there, you can fiddle with
zoom and pan and the dropdown menu for different maps.
- US Census maps and data to the tract and block level
Go to the FactFinder homepage at US Census, located at
http://factfinder.census.gov.
Near the bottom of the left column is a link to enter a street address; go there.
Using the Sandflat neighborhood center again, we'll guess the address to be 1400 Ash St.
and enter that.
This returns a menu; click on "Block Group 3".
Next to the box are buttons for "Map It" and "Go".
Click the "Map It" button and a window pops up showing us the boundaries of
this area; it appears that we have guessed the correct street address.
Now click the "Go" button and scroll down to see links to data for
this area below.
You can get to a smaller area by clicking on "Block 3007" on the menu list,
and then clicking the buttons next to the list,
or to a larger area by clicking on "Tract 202" on the menu list.
