Courses Taught:

 

Introduction to Sociology

Course material included theories, methodology, overview of major sociological paradigms, and a survey of the core areas in Sociology.

 

Research Methods

Topics included theory construction, data gathering, and analysis. Research designs (experimentation, survey, and observation) were reviewed. Supervised students' independent research and class projects.

 

Social Statistics

Taught descriptive and inferential statistics. Included weekly laboratory sessions in which students learned how to use statistical software programs, such as SPSS, SAS, or Excel.

 

Social Psychology

Investigated how social factors influenced the individual's personality, perception, attitudes, and behavior. Examined the theory, methods, and application of current research on topics such as gender, relationships, aggression, and group behavior.

 

Complex Organizations

Examined the structure and content of organizations by exploring organizational theories, processes, and environments. Explored the bureaucratic, instrumental, and hierarchical nature of organization as well as alternative organizational forms.

 

Wellness

Involved a sociological analysis of the medical institution. Explored how the legislative, economic, environmental processes and life-style choices influenced wellness. Surveyed the ways of acquiring, maintaining, and enhancing wellness.

 

Sociology of the Family

Provided an overview of the institution of the family by examining both its internal structure and its relation to the other social structures. Focused on cross-cultural and historical viewpoints in exploring the basic concepts and ideas on the family.

 

Social Problems

Reviewed the sociological approaches to the study of social problems. Topics included, but were not limited to, problems of the environment, inequality, institutions, and the individual.

 

Special Issues: Immigration Experience

Contents: early and contemporary immigration patterns, effects of immigration on both the immigrants and natives, future of immigration. Examined the nature and impact of push-pull factors during different stages of immigration.

 

Social Stratification

Taught the relation between social stratification and life-chances of individuals. Topics included the historical and contemporary systems of stratification, theories, problems of class and caste, and modern trends in class system and social mobility

 

Deviance

Analyzed the concepts and theories of deviance as well as the various social control mechanisms. Explored the process of social construction of deviance.

 

Race and Ethnic Relations

Discussed and analyzed the concepts and theories on race and ethnicity from a sociological perspective. Included a survey of various racial and ethnic groups and the patterns of relations among them.

 

Ethnic and Cultural Minorities

Discussed and analyzed the concepts and theories on race and ethnicity from a sociological perspective. Included a survey of various racial and ethnic groups and the patterns of relations among them.

 

 Sociology of Health and Illness

Taught how life-style choices, work environment, family context, and the legislative, economic, and environmental processes influence health and illness. Included a survey of the national and international scene.

 

Managing Cultural Differences

Explored the critical sensitivities one must exhibit in various parts of the world as related to the demands of business for a repertoire of style, a respect for diversity, and understanding of cultures.

 

Religion and Society

Reviewed the major lines of classical and contemporary sociological thinking on religious consciousness and religious practice. Examined the social bases of churches, sects, cults and other religious expressions around the world.

 

Introduction to Anthropology

Reviewed the basic concepts in Anthropology. Main topics: theory, research, evolution of human beings in history, their organization, communication, culture, cultural change.
