Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  What are the requirements to get into the MSW program? 

A:  Briefly, successful applicants will have a 2.8 GPA, good writing skills, work or volunteer experience in the human services, and 3 professional letters of reference.  You can find more details under the admissions tab on the social work website.
Q:  Is the May 1st application deadline firm?

A:  We will continue to receive and review applications until we seat a full cohort.
Q:  What if I haven’t taken the Introduction to Social Work class?

A:  That course is no longer a prerequisite. You may apply without having taken the Introduction course.
Q:  Is the MSW program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education?

A:  We are in candidacy status from CSWE and are completing the accreditation process through the CSWE Commission on Accreditation.  This is a 3-year process, but it is retroactive. We expect to achieve full accreditation in June 2023.  Students who have enrolled in or completed their MSW prior to accreditation, will be grandfathered in.  That will enable them to obtain licensure.
Q:  Can I mail in my MSW application?

A:  No.  The application is to be completed electronically with the exception of transcripts.  Official transcripts can either be emailed to transcripts@tamut.edu or mailed to the Graduate Coordinator.
Q:   Can I get credit for work or life experience?

A:  No.  The Council on Social Work Education does not allow students to receive credit for work or life experience.
Q:  How many hours of field practicum are required for the program?

A:  Students are required to complete 900 clock hours of supervised practice in a field placement.  This is broken down over two years with 400 hours in the generalist placement and 500 hours in the specialized clinical placement.
Q:  Can I do my practicum at my place of employment? 

A:  You may if you are able to demonstrate the social work core competencies and practice behaviors in your job.  You will need to discuss this with the field director upon admission to the program.
Q:  Can I do the program either part time or full time?

A:  Yes, you may choose either full time, or one of two part-time options.
