Honors Director's Message

Photo of Craig NakashianWelcome to the Texas A&M University-Texarkana Academic Honors Program!

Joining the Honors Program here at A&M-Texarkana demonstrates a commitment to excellence and to getting the most out of your educational  time with us. You will be given opportunities to build an Honors experience that is both personalized to your interests and guided by the principles of what makes Honors students special: a desire to excel academically, an interest in service, and the drive to become the best version of yourself. These opportunities will take the form of dedicated Honors courses with your fellow Honors students, individual projects done hand-in-hand with faculty mentors, the chance to present your original research, mentor fellow students, and plan other co-curricular activities with your colleagues in the Honors program.

Our Honors courses are built around a dedication to approaching topics form an interdisciplinary perspective, a focus on student engagement, and student-centered teaching. Students will be expected and encouraged to be active learners, engaging in undergraduate research, and working closely with faculty in developing new and exciting educational projects in a small class environment.

The Honors program also gives students the opportunity to develop leadership skills both professionally and personally. All new Honors students are  automatically part of the Honors Program Student Union, which will play an important role in governance of the program, as well as planning for future activities and courses. During your time in Honors you can earn "badges" in areas such as stewardship, research, and teaching that further demonstrate and personalize your Honors experience.

Being a member of the Honors program is a mark of distinction, and it shows potential employers and graduate schools that you are the kind of student who goes above and beyond what is expected.  You will demonstrate that you are a motivated, ambitious, and creative person willing to accept challenges to overcome.

We look forward to welcoming you to our program!
