Meet PLACE Leaders

Dr. Jaime Cantrell, Program Co-Chair 

Assistant Professor of English and Director of the Program in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies 

Dr. Cantrell earned her M.A. in Women’s Studies in 2009 from the University of Alabama and her Ph.D. in English in 2014 from Louisiana State University with specializations in American Literature, Women’s and Gender Studies, and Southern Studies. A former Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Ole Miss, she’s been awarded library and research grants from Cornell University, Duke University, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. She is the author of essays and reviews appearing in Feminist Formations, The Journal of Lesbian Studies, Study the South, Notches, This Book is An Action: Feminist Print Culture and Activist Aesthetics (UIP Press, 2015), The Bohemian South: Creating Countercultures, from Poe to Punk (UNC Press, 2017), and The Journal Homosexuality. With Amy L. Stone, she co-edited Out of the Closet, Into the Archive: Researching Sexual Histories published by the Queer Politics and Cultures series at SUNY Press in 2015. 

Dr. Craig Nakashian, Program Co-Chair 

Associate Professor of History/Department Chair and Director of the Academic Honors Program

Dr. Nakashian has been a faculty member at Texas A&M University-Texarkana since 2010. He holds a PhD in History from the University of Rochester with a focus on medieval Europe, and a Master's degree in Medieval History from Durham University in the UK. He is primarily interested in medieval religious and military culture, and in 2016 he published a monograph entitled Warrior Churchmen of Medieval England, 1000-1250. In 2017 Dr. Nakashian co-edited a scholarly volume entitled Prowess, Piety, and Public Order: Essays in Honor of Richard W. Kaeuper which brought together 19 articles covering those aspects of medieval society. Currently, he is co-editing a volume on the role of cities in medieval warfare.
