East Texas Writing Project

The East Texas Writing Project (ETWP) is one of 190 National Writing Project (NWP) sites across the nation, one of only 10 sites in the state of Texas, and the only site serving K-16 educators in the Arklatex.

NWP sites, like the East Texas Writing Project, focus on the core mission of improving the teaching of writing and improving the use of writing across the disciplines. We invite teachers to join our ongoing professional learning network, and we applaud teachers who want to improve their own writing and their teaching of writing.

The ETWP focuses on teachers as writers and teachers as leaders. We support the “teachers teaching teachers” model for personal and professional development in writing instruction through programming developed by our leadership team.

We achieve these aims through a combination of high quality programming and professional development for area educators including:

  • evening workshops and seminars led by experienced teachers that focus on providing resources and tools relevant across the grade levels and across the disciplines;
  • an annual, one-day spring educators conference;
  • various creative writing events in partnership with community resources and organizations; and
  • an annual Summer Institute (link to Summer Institute page), open to select participants that offers 6 semester hours of graduate coursework credit.

In short, we strive to offer contemporary, effective tools and resources supported by sound best practices in writing pedagogy to teachers who want to integrate writing into their classrooms in engaging and educational ways.

For more information or to get involved with ETWP, contact the Director, Dr. Corrine Hinton. You can sign up to see our Facebook page for updates and news.

Meet Ashleigh
“I had the honor of participating in the East Texas Writing Project in the summer of 2017. During those few weeks, I saw myself grow as a writer as well as feel more prepared as I was entering my first year of teaching. As we explored different genres of writing and tried our hand at them, I discovered the genres that worked best for me. I wrote a short fictional piece from the perspective of a dog, and I actually have been looking into having it published as a children’s book. I discovered the genres that worked best for me. As a first year teacher, I was actually able to pull materials and activities presented from teachers from around the Texarkana area. Without participating in the ETWP, I wouldn't have found my niche for writing, and I would have been lost my first year of teaching.”
