Business Faculty Classifications

Business Faculty Classifications:

The College of Business, Engineering, and Technology at Texas A&M University-Texarkana categorizes, tracks, and monitors faculty status based on the definitions outlined by AACSB in Standard 3.  CBET categorizes faculty qualification status based on a number of factors including their initial academic preparation assessed by their earned degrees and credentials; their sustained academic and professional engagement, which includes augmented professional qualifications and academic and professional engagement activities maintaining currency and relevancy; and finally, their sustained level of intellectual and though leadership contributions.

Categorization of the faculty in the College of Business, Engineering, and Technology at A&M–Texarkana follows the defined categories from AACSB Standard 3.  The definitions are as follows:

  • Initial Scholarly Academic Status (SA) StatusInitial SA status is granted to the following:
    • An earned doctoral degree in teaching field within the last five years.
    • ABD status in a doctoral degree program in the teaching field within the last three years.
    • Former administrators returning to faculty status have SA status for three years from the date they returned to faculty status.

 

  • Sustaining Scholarly Academics (SA) Status SA faculty sustain currency and relevance through scholarship and related activities. For sustained SA status, a faculty member must have two peer reviewed journal articles in a rolling five-year period plus one ‘other academic’ or ‘professional engagement activities’. A non-exhaustive list of academic and professional activities includes the following:
  • Relevant and active editorships with academic journals or other business publications
  • Service on editorial boards or committees
  • Validation of SA status through leadership positions, participation in recognized academic societies and associations, research awards, academic fellow status, invited presentations, etc.
  • Publication in professional journals utilized by academics and practitioners
  • Publication in conference proceedings
  • Article published in non-peer reviewed periodical
  • Papers presented at professional meetings
  • Articles published in non-refereed journals
  • Active service as members of relevant boards of directors
  • Related professional consulting

 

  • Initial Scholarly Practitioners (SP) Status Normally, SA status applies to practitioner faculty with at least an earned Master’s degree in business or a specialized Master’s degree related to business who augment their experience with development and engagement activities involving substantive scholarly activities in their fields of teaching.

 

  • Sustaining Scholarly Practitioners (SP) Status – Scholarly practitioners sustain currency and relevance through continued professional experience, engagement, or interaction and scholarship related to their professional background and experience.

 

For sustained SP status, a faculty member must have one peer reviewed journal article in a rolling five-year period plus two additional activities from the categories below with at least one from each category. An activity may be repeated.

 

  • Scholarly Activities: A non-exhaustive list of scholarly activities includes the following:
    • Relevant, active editorships with academic, professional, or other business/management publications
    • Service on editorial boards or committees
    • Validation of SP status through leadership positions in recognized academic societies, research awards, academic fellow status, invited presentations, etc.
    • Development and presentation of continuing professional education activities or executive education programs
    • Substantive roles and participation in academic associations
    • Publication in professional journals utilized by academics and practitioners
    • Publication in conference proceedings
    • Published cases
    • Papers presented at professional meetings
    • Articles published in non-refereed periodical

 

  • Practitioner activities: A non-exhaustive list of practitioner activities includes the following:
    • Serve as an active member of relevant boards of directors
    • Related professional consulting
    • Maintain a professional certification
    • Serve as an officer of a professional organization
    • Appear as an expert in the media

 

  • Initial Practice Academics (PA) Status - Practicing academics must have an earned doctoral degree in the teaching field or business.

 

  • Sustaining Practice Academics (PA) Status - Normally, faculty may undertake a variety of professional engagement activities to interact with business and management practice to support maintenance of PA status. For sustained PA status, a faculty member must have one activity from each of the categories below:

 

  • Significant Practitioner Activities: A non-exhaustive list of professional engagement activities includes the following:
    • Consulting activities that are material in terms of time and substance
    • Student internships at TAMUT
    • Development and presentation of executive education programs
    • Sustained professional work supporting qualified status
    • University or College administrative activities

 

  • Other Practitioner Activities: A non-exhaustive list of professional engagement activities includes the following:
    • Participation in business professional associations
    • Practice-oriented intellectual contributions 
    • Relevant and active service on boards of directors
    • Documented continuing professional education experiences
    • Participation in professional events that focus on the practice of business, management, and related issues
    • Participation in other activities that place faculty in direct contact with business or other organizational leaders

 

  • Initial Instructional Practitioners (IP) Status is granted to newly hired faculty with at least an earned Master’s degree in business or a specialized Master’s degree related to business and significant and substantive professional experience.

 

  • Sustaining Instructional Practitioners (IP) Status – IP faculty sustain currency and relevance through continued professional experience and engagement related to their professional backgrounds and experience.

 

For sustained PA status, a faculty member must have one activity from each of the categories below:

  • Significant Practitioner Activities: A non-exhaustive list of professional engagement activities includes the following:
    • Consulting activities that are material in terms of time and substance
    • Student internships at TAMUT
    • Program Director or other administrative position at a college or university
    • Enrollment in a business discipline doctoral program.
    • Development and presentation of executive education programs
    • Sustained professional work supporting qualified status
    • Exception: Faculty who are not currently working in business, but retired or no longer employed in a full-time position in business that was significant in duration and level of responsibility, may be considered IP for a period of 5 years by virtue of their work experience.

 

  • Other Practitioner Activities: A non-exhaustive list of professional engagement activities includes the following:
    • Participation in business professional associations
    • Practice-oriented intellectual contributions 
    • Relevant and active service on boards of directors
    • Documented continuing professional education experiences
    • Documented professional certifications in the area of teaching
    • Participation in professional events that focus on the practice of business, management, and related issues
    • Participation in other activities that place faculty in direct contact with business or other organizational leaders
