Summer 2018 Workshops

General registration for the 2018 Young Writers’ Workshop program has closed. Limited spots are still available in some workshop groups. Please contact YWW Director, Dr. Corrine Hinton, at 903-223-3124 or by email to chinton@tamut.edu, to see if a spot is available for your young writer.

Program Dates: July 16 – 27, 2018 from 8:30am to 12:00pm each weekday (Monday-Friday)

This summer, we’ve opened up the program to incoming first graders! As a result, we’ve shifted our workshop groups just a bit to provide a better learning experience for all participants.

Welcome to Whoville (incoming 1st and 2nd graders)

Just in time for this winter’s new release of The Grinch, our youngest writers will focus on developing character and setting through Dr. Seuss’ mysterious land of Whoville. Our writers will create torn paper collages to illustrate their ideal Whoville resident or place in town and write limericks in Seussian style to match!

Food for Thought (incoming 3rd and 4th graders)

Incoming third and fourth graders will explore the wonderful word of food through reading, writing, and creative arts that will bring the senses of taste, smell, and touch to life. These young writers will develop recipes for a class cookbook and write visual poetry in culinary-inspired shapes and images.

Monsters in the Closet (incoming 5th and 6th graders)

Our oldest elementary schoolers will have some frightening fun with this monsters-inspired theme that will focus on building mystery and suspense through spooky ballads and scary short stories. Creepy creatures, ghastly ghosts, bizarre bumps in the night – they’re all open for these young writers to bring to life.

Be the Change (incoming 7th and 8th graders)

Young people can be leaders too! This workshop is sure to inspire our maturing young writers to channel their passions and voices into composing zines (short magazines) and public service posters for causes that matter to them. These writers will learn to balance visual and textual elements of persuasion, using words and pictures to effectively help others be the change!

Tales from the Peculiar (incoming 9th – 12th graders)

Drawing from the novel and popular movie, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, our oldest writers will perfect their characterization, dialogue, and plot development in this freaky fantasy style workshop. Writers will develop short, one-act screenplays and then design their own websites they can keep after the workshop ends. This workshop combines elements of textual, visual, and digital design!
