English FAQs 

What is the difference between the B.A. and B.S. in English?

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree requires two years of the same foreign language. Two years in the same foreign language in high school may meet the requirement for the first year of the same language at the college level. The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) doesn’t have the foreign language requirements, however, there is more room for writing courses within the B.S. electives.

Both the B.A. and B.S. require a minor. There are a many minors to choose from in the College of Arts, Sciences & Education (CASE) and College of Business, Engineering, and Technology (CBET).

Do I have opportunities to get published as an English student?

Yes! We offer our very own literary journal, Aquila Review, which publishes drama, fiction, poetry, nonfiction, visual arts, and music from Texas A&M University-Texarkana. You can also write for the Eagle Eye (A&M-Texarkana’s digital newspaper) or participate in the East Texas Writing Project.

What job opportunities might be available to me with an English degree?

A degree in English from A&M–Texarkana can open the door to many exciting careers in editing, production, marketing, publishing, journalism, corporate communications, public relations, media, creative writing, copywriting, technical writing, science writing, freelance writing, grant writing and more.

You can also pursue teacher certification for middle school or high school, through a B.A. in English 7-12, English, Language Arts, and Reading Certification or a B.S. in English 7-12, English, Language Arts, and Reading Certification. You can also teach at the college level, elementary/primary level, within the private school setting, teach English as a Second Language, or pursue educational administration through a master's of education (MEd), principal, or superintendent certification.
