Biography

Hannah Lee Jones is Assistant Professor of History at Texas A&M University–Texarkana. Her research examines the intersections of medieval hagiography, Franciscan spirituality, and apocalyptic expectation, with particular attention to St. Clare of Assisi and the Order of Poor Clares. She has received competitive research funding to conduct archival work across Europe and has presented her scholarship at international conferences, including the International Medieval Congress at Leeds and International Congress on Medieval Studies at Kalamazoo. She is currently completing a monograph that explores a previously understudied dimension of Clare of Assisi’s legacy, namely, her idealization as a crusading saint and spiritual martyr in the fourteenth century.  

Professional Experience

Jones served as Editorial Assistant for the interdisciplinary journal Mediaevalia and as Coordinator of Pre-Law Services at Binghamton University. Since 2024, she has served as Outreach Chair of the Hagiography Society.

Scholarship & Creative Activity

Jones’s dissertation, Poor Women of the New Jerusalem: Clare of Assisi, Spiritual Martyrdom, and Female Sanctity in the Later Middle Ages, was awarded Binghamton University’s Distinguished Dissertation Award in 2025. Her recent publications include a chapter titled “‘Hostile People Invading the Country’: Urban Life in the Midi and the Forced Relocation of the Poor Clares during the Hundred Years’ War,” in Mendicants and the Urban Mediterranean, 1200–1500 (Routledge, 2025). She is currently completing a monograph, Love Is a Battlefield: Affective Piety, Conflict Zones, and the Cult of Clare of Assisi in the Late Middle Ages.
