Student Excellence and Retention Rates Soar at A&M–Texarkana

TEXARKANA, Texas – Texas A&M University-Texarkana is in the middle of an unprecedented period of growth, as the University has set new enrollment records for the sixth consecutive term. But it isn’t just the number of students enrolling that’s impressive. The University is also experiencing a surge in students who are high academic achievers, which is driving increases in another important higher education metric- retention rate.

Retention rate is simply the rate at which current students return from semester to semester and from one year to the next. Academic success is one of the largest factors that plays into retention rates. Over the past two years Texas A&M University-Texarkana has seen a 40% increase in Honors College Students, and an incredible 269% increase in the number of freshmen who graduated in the top 10 of their respective high school classes.

“Our sharp increases in enrollment are frequently discussed, but it is also important to point out that we are not just attracting more students. We are attracting a greater number of high performing students than we have previously,” said Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Jim Worthen. “Exceptionally prepared students who have many options available are choosing Texas A&M University-Texarkana. The addition of these students elevates the classroom experience for all and results in higher retention rates.”

The surge in the University’s retention rates can be seen in several categories:

• Graduate Student Retention is up 9%
• Undergraduate Retention is up 5%
• Student Athlete Retention is up 9%
• Overall Student Retention is up 6%

“While we are achieving record enrollment growth, we are also raising the bar for student achievement and academic quality,” said Dr. Venus Lillis, A&M-Texarkana Vice President for Enrollment Management. “Students are choosing A&M-Texarkana because they want more than a degree.
