MacArthur Journalism Grant

MacArthur Journalism Grant

With the support of the MacArthur Foundation, the ETWP seeks to develop a model of a program for high-school youth that aims to address the "news desert" that exists for many living in low-income rural communities. Working with a range of national partners across the country, such as local public radio outlets, NWP teacher-leaders have utilized and refined activities that engage young people as journalists writing for real-world audiences. Teachers involved in this project will take an inquiry stance and help contribute to the field's understanding of how to increase civic engagement and news literacy in the context of a strong writing program located in a rural community.

As a participant, you will get:

  • 1,000 dollars,
  • Two days of online professional development,
  • An opportunity for your journalism students to publish their pieces on the "Writing our Future" website,
  • Every other month meetings with the ETWP and the NWP to discuss, problem-solve, and share stories as the work unfolds.
To fulfill the grant, you will need to:
  • Participate in the professional development and follow up meetings,
  • Plan and implement a cycle of instruction in journalistic writing for at least 12-15 students that ends with each student creating two publishable pieces (a) An issue overview (b) A piece of local reporting on the issue.
