Certification

Any student seeking teaching certification is required to pass a Pre-Admission Content Test (PACT) for admission to the Alternative Certification Program. The student will then be required to pass two to three certification tests, depending upon the certification area. 

TX PACT: This test is completed as part of admission to the Alternative Certification Program and Eligibility for Internship Certificate Process. 

TExES Content Test: Students seeking Bilingual Certification should take Core Subjects: EC-6 (#291) or Core Subjects: 4-8 (#211), Bilingual Supplemental (#164) AND BTLPT - Bilingual Target Language Proficiencies Test Spanish (#190) to be eligible for hire by school district. Limited Testing Opportunities: Students wishing to take the BTLPT for Bilingual or LOTE Certifications need to be aware these tests are offered only a few times per semester due to writing and language components.

Pedagogy and Professional Responsibility (PPR) Test: Teacher candidates may register to take the PPR Test when eligible.  To be eligible, candidate must meet all three criteria below:

  • Admitted into the Eagles TEACH Alt Program
  • Completed ED 506, ED 508, ED 530 and ED 557
  • Participate in 6-hours of state mandated test preparation.  See link above "TExES Test Preparation Workshops" for dates offered and registration information.

The Science of Teaching Reading: Students seeking the following certifications must also take and pass the Science of Teaching Reading exam before they are eligible to file for standard certification:

  • Core Subjects: Early Childhood-Grade 6
  • Core Subjects: Grades 4-8
  • English Language Arts and Reading: Grades 4-8
  • English Language Arts and Reading/Social Studies: Grades 4-8

Before completing the Internship or Clinical Practicum, candidate is required to provide documentation of participation in 6-hours of state mandated test preparation.

Alternative Certification assumes teacher candidates have the knowledge and expertise in a discipline area from previous education, work and life experiences.  Alternative Certification candidates must pass a Content Test in the discipline in which seeking certification as part of the Admission process.
