Internal Grants Opportunities
Internal grant funding is provided by the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) to faculty and students to support projects in the areas of research, scholarly studies, and creative endeavors. The purpose of internal grant funding is to provide seed money for developing a proposal for external funding agencies.
Unallowable cost are:- Faculty salaries or supplementation of faculty salaries, or professional or support staff salaries
- Personal computers and printers (upgrades or software will be considered if directly related to research activities).
- Professional development activities, including speaker fees.
- Program development or curriculum development activities.
- Salary for research assistantships.
- State-imposed limitations on the use of the funds (e.g., non-per diem food, door prizes, and gift certificates).
- Support or evaluate instruction, programs, or the development or evaluation of curriculum materials.
- International travel
- Publication fees
The following are the internal grant opportunities:
Jumpstart Grant
Provides seed money to new tenure-track faculty in their first two years of employment to jumpstart their research interests and build a sustainable research agenda. The funds may be used for research-related items such as supplies and equipment, data sets, or research assistant. The outcome should support at least one submission to an external funding source. Up to 4 projects for $3,000 each will be awarded each academic year subject to availability of funds.
Elevate Grant
Provides seed money to junior, tenure-track faculty within 2-6 years employment for research that will lead to further support from external funding agencies. The funds may be used for research-related items such as supplies and equipment, data sets, or research assistant. The outcome should support at least one submission to an external funding source. Up to 4 projects for $3,500 each will be awarded each academic year.
URICA (University Research & Innovative Creative Arts)
URICA provides seed money to tenured faculty to support and develop research projects or creative endeavors in any discipline. The funds may be utilized for research assistants, supplies/equipment, or other expenses reasonable to the success of the project. The outcome should support at least one submission to an external funding source. Up to 3 projects for $4,000 each will be awarded each academic year subject to availability of funds.
Eligibility:
- Full-time faculty, instructors, staff, undergraduate and graduate students in any discipline for the appropriate opportunity categories
- The applicant may submit only one application per academic year.
- If an applicant was awarded an ORSP internal grant in the last funding cycle, they are not eligible to apply for the current funding cycle.
- If an applicant was previously awarded an ORSP internal grant, they must also have previously submitted to an external funding agency.

URICA (Innovative Creative Arts)
URICA provides seed money to tenured faculty to support and develop creative endeavors. The goal of the creative arts program is to provide support to those projects that propose the creation and/or presentation of works of creative art. The funds may be utilized as a summer stipend, summer graduate research assistantship, and/or supplies, expenses, equipment, and travel to attend conference or workshop. The outcome should support at least one submission to an external funding source. Up to 3 projects for $1,000 each will be awarded each academic year.
REACH Program (Research Enrichment in the Arts, Creative disciplines, and Humanities)
The REACH program encourages the artistic and creative endeavors of tenure or tenure- track faculty. The program supports the creation and presentation of works in the fields of Art, Literature, Humanities, Social Sciences and more. Up to 4 projects for $500 each will be awarded each academic year.
Provost Award
The Provost Award provides funding opportunities for faculty for academic innovation in teaching and learning that integrate new educational methods and technologies into their classrooms and promote innovation in the curriculum or the learning environment. The award supports research/creative/scholarly endeavors for enhancing the professional growth of the faculty and ultimately enhancing the research quotient of the university. Provost Awards are contingent upon availability of funds.
Student Internal Grant Opportunities
Dissertation Completion Grant
Dissertation Completion grants are designed to support doctoral students’ dissertation research. This grant may be used for data acquisition; transcription costs; travel for conference attendance, if dissertation research is presented; incentives for research participants; travel which directly relates to conducting the research; and/or supplies, materials, and equipment that support the research. Three (3) Dissertation Assistance grants will be awarded in the amount of $1,500 each subject to the availability of funds
Graduate Student Research Grant
This grant supports graduate students involved in research and can be used for travel to academic conferences to present papers, with requests to participate in other forums to present work also considered. Funds can also be used to support application fees for national/international fellowships. Students are eligible for no more than one award per academic year. Up to 10 projects for $600 each will be awarded each academic year subject to availability of funds.
Undergraduate Student Research Grant
This grant supports undergraduate students involved in research and can be used for travel to academic conferences to present papers, with requests to participate in other forums to present work also considered. Funds can also be used to support application fees for national/international fellowships. Students are eligible for no more than one award per academic year. Up to 4 projects for $500 each will be awarded each academic year subject to availability of funds.
Eligibility:
- Strong academic record
- Research will contribute to and advance the scholarship within your field
- There is confidence you will be able to complete your dissertation
- Your program has minimal resources to support you during your dissertation process
- At least 1 letter of recommendation from dissertation committee
- At least 1 letter of recommendation from faculty advisor (graduate and undergraduate)
