Community Involvement and Volunteering

A hallmark of Honors education is the opportunity to engage directly with the community around us. Embedding ourselves in the community gives hands-on experiences and opportunities to learn and grow outside the classroom. That involvement can take a variety of forms, including volunteer work, service learning projects, or internships, among many other opportunities.

We have developed partnerships with several community organizations and locations to give our students a variety of opportunities to engage. Below are some of our current community partners:

HandsOn Texarkana

"Serving our Community Through Volunteerism" 

  • Current projects include working with the senior transportation program or using your unique talents in tailor-made projects.

Randy Sams' Outreach Shelter

“Serving those in need”

  • Current projects include managing the donation of items, preparing and serving dinner, and developing a workshop on life skills.

The Assembly Line

“Using research to support regional economic development”

  • Current projects include quantifying local entrepreneurial impact, evaluating the effectiveness of business incubators, and developing strategies for community economic outreach.

Center for Financial Literacy and Investment

“Empower individuals to achieve financial wellness through financial literacy and investment education”

  • Current projects include building awareness of the CashCourse curriculum and the Bloomberg Lab, building a financial coaching program for students, and working in the Volunteer Income Tax preparation program.

“Making an Impact where you live”

  • Current projects include planning and implementing the Annual Resource Day, working with the Homeless Coalition to implement programming, and helping to develop a Downtown Master Plan between Texarkana, Texas and Texarkana, Arkansas.

Animal Care and Adoption Center

  • The Animal Care & Adoption Center exists to protect and care for lost, stray, and unwanted animals and to promote animal welfare through adoption, education, and other programs.
