Student Fee Referendum

Student Fee Referendum

Voting is open until Friday, September 12th at noon.

Texas A&M University-Texarkana has proposed a student fee referendum that would be effective for any students beginning at A&M-Texarkana in the Fall 2026 semester.

Current A&M-Texarkana Students Will Not be Affected

Current students vote on fee changes, but only future A&M-Texarkana students (Fall 2026 and after) will be affected. As a current student, your fees are locked and will not change.

Fee adjustments aren’t just about covering costs, they’re about investing back into your student experience.

Note: Voting will be open from Tuesday, September 9th through Friday, September 12th at noon.

Why a Referendum?

  • Across the nation, universities are facing increased institutional costs associated with utilities, insurance, maintenance, and student services. Fee increases help to ensure the university can continue to support our current students, services, and continued growth.
  • Most student fees at A&M-Texarkana have not been increased for over a decade. Even with the proposed changes, fees will remain competitive or below many of our peer institutions.
  • Fee increases will allow the university to continue investing in high-demand academic programs, world class facilities for students, and a student life experience that is second to none.

Why It Matters

  • A&M-Texarkana is among the fastest growing universities in the state, region, and nation. Fee increases help ensure all current and incoming students have the best college experience possible.
  • Fee adjustments allow us to enhance academic offerings, improve student services, invest in the best facilities, and attract and retain excellent faculty and staff. They also assist in offsetting the ever-increasing costs associated with operating a university campus.
  • It supports Campus Life, including Student Center programs, fitness, wellness services, recreation, and athletics.

Proposed Fee Adjustments

  • Rec Sports Fee: $100 → $150/semester (last increased 2015)
  • Student Center Fee: $3/credit hr (max $54) → Flat $78/semester (last increased 2010)
  • Student Health Fee: $60 → $70/semester (last increased 2024)
  • Athletics Fee: $13 → $28/credit hr (last increased 2020)

Athletic Fee-Peer Comparison

A&M-Texarkana continues to prove a strong value for students. Even with the proposed increases, our fees remain competitive, and often below, our peer institutions.

Peer Examples:

  • East Texas A&M (formerly Texas A&M-Commerce): $32/SCH (student-approved referendum)
  • West Texas A&M: $32/SCH (student-approved referendum)

Worth Knowing

The Texas A&M University System recently announced a tuition & fee freeze, but this applies only to academic tuition and course fees, which have already been frozen for several years. This referendum is about non-academic fees that fund student services and experiences.
